The cooldown
Once you change your username, you have to wait 60 days before you can change it again. We do this so people can rely on your handle sticking for a reasonable window.
What happens to your old username?
When you rename, the old handle goes into a 30-day “tombstone” — it can’t be claimed by anyone else during that period. This protects you from someone immediately grabbing your old handle and impersonating you. After 30 days the old handle returns to the available pool.
How to rename
1. Open your account settings → Profile tab.
2. Click “Change username” on the username card at the top.
3. Type the new handle. We’ll check availability live.
4. Confirm. Your profile URL switches to the new handle immediately.
Old links still work — for the 30-day tombstone window, anyone who typed your old URL gets a “this user has moved” notice (when that feature is fully wired). After the window, the old URL becomes a generic “profile not found” page.
